Monday, February 6
  1. As a class, we will read through paragraph 14 of Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr. in Patterns pp. 588-601.
  2. Group Section Analysis:  Prepare a small poster to present the group’s findings    Section 1-Ps 1-11; Section 2-Ps 12-14; Section 3-Ps 15-22; Section 4-Ps 23-26; Section 5-Ps 27-32; Section 6-Ps 33-41; Section 7-Ps 42-44; Section 8-Ps 45-47
  • Summarize the section
  • Identify the step of Aristotelian argument represented in the section (introduction, background, proposition, proof, refutation, conclusion).
  • Identify the dominant rhetorical strategy.
  • Analyze King’s response to the clergy’s claims.
  • Evaluate the most moving line in the section.
  1. Present group findings.

Tuesday, February 7
  1. Finish Letter from Birmingham Jail group presentations.
  2. Introduction to Synthesis
    1. Review From Inquiry to Academic Writing Chapter 7
    2. Read Joliffe’s rationale for synthesis
    3. Review Synthesis Skills Necessary notes
    4. Read pp. 162-174 from 5 Steps to a 5. Complete the practice on pp. 165-166.
    5. Look at a few samples of synthesis.  Compare to writing the first part of the research paper.

Wednesday, February 8           
  1. Introduction to the research packet.  Remember, the first part of the paper is largely a synthesis piece.
  2. Research Précis #1 assignment due Wed 2/15.
  3. Discuss They Say, I Say introduction as it pertains to research. 
  4. Gather with research topic groups to talk about the latest findings.  Use the template on p. 9 of They Say, I Say to construct a rough introduction to your research paper.  Feel free to borrow from articles that your peers found and add to your own ideas.
Homework: By Mon 2/13, read the following pages in Patterns: 759-761, 774-781.

Thursday, February 9
  1. Practice with a Synthesis Prompt: 2015 Honor Code
    1. Use the Working the Synthesis Prompt handout to think about the question before reading the sources.
    2. Use the Working the Synthesis Documents handout to plan how the sources can inform your argument.  Make a chart like the one of p. 168 in 5 Steps to a 5.
 
Friday, February 10
  1. Multiple Choice: Letter from Birmingham Jail plus two cold passages.
  2. Review the 2015 Honor Code synthesis work you did yesterday.  Write your practice synthesis essay.
  3. Review the College Board anchors papers for the prompt.  Score your own essay.
