TH 10/15: Classical Arguments thematic reading due

Learning Goal: Identify and evaluate MLK’s use of rhetorical strategies. CBAPELC C5—The course requires nonfiction readings that are selected to give students opportunities to identify and explain an author’s use of rhetorical strategies and techniques.

Monday, October 12
  1. Preview Vocab Unit 8
    1. Read pp. 98-99 in Vocabulary Workshop book.
    2. With your tablemates, create silly clues for each word on pp. 100-102.
    3. Read the letter to Chairman Cathy McMorris Rogers from Representative Walter B. Jones.  Add at least 10 vocabulary unit 8 words to appropriate places in the letter.
    4. Turn in your enhanced letter.
  2. Read the October 12 issue of Upfront magazine.
    1. Choose one article about a topic that interests you.
    2. Write a letter about that topic to someone who either has the power to make change regarding the topic or needs to know about the topic to enhance their own experience.  In the letter, include details important to the topic, both pro and con sides of the topic, and a call to action.  Use Representative Jones’s letter as a guide.
    3. Turn in your letter.
 
Tuesday, October 13
  1. Look at new Fish HTWAS Ch. 4 assignment.
  2. Introduction to MLK “Letter from Birmingham Jail”: View clip from “A Time for Justice”
  3. Analyze the Clergy Statement that inspired “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”  
  4. Discuss the organization and the style of argument in the MLK’s letter. Identify each place that MLK refutes an accusation made against him.
 
Wednesday, October 14
PSAT Schedule
  1. Read “If MLK had Tweeted from Jail.”  Compare the author’s claim to one you might make after having written your own letters this week.  How does Twitter writing compare to letter writing?
  2. Complete the Tone Handout:  Using MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, find one paragraph that best exemplifies each tone.  Then, write a brief statement that justifies each decision.

Friday, October 16
  1. Multiple Choice: MLK plus a pre-20th century passage (25 min)
  1. With a partner*, complete analysis of paragraph 14 of MLK’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”.   Write one rhetorical analysis. Follow the guidelines for the paired timed writing.
*Partners are teacher-chosen. One person in the pair will serve as “coach,” while other is “student.”  Coach will help supply and organize ideas; student will write the analysis.
